Shell to Sea has criticised a decision by Minister for Energy Pat Carey to sign consents for the last section of the Corrib gas pipeline on the day of the General Election. Permission has been granted for the construction of a gas pipeline from the Corrib gas field subsea facilities to the Corrib gas terminal at Bellanaboy and for an approval of an addendum to the Plan of Development for the Corrib gas field development.

Speaking at the launch of Sinn Fein's election proposals on natural resources, Mayo Sinn Féin election candidate Thérèse Ruane said that strong measures are required to ensure that Irish natural resources are used for the benefit of the people. Among the proposals announced today is a commitment to renegotiate existing oil and gas contracts including that held by Shell for the Corrib Gas field, to give the State a 51 per cent shareholding while increasing the levies to 48 per cent and royalties to 7.5 per cent.

The final section of the Corrib gas pipeline has been granted permission by An Bord Pleanála. The revised route submitted by Shell E&P Ireland last year will link the pipeline at Glengad to the gas terminal at Bellanaboy.

TO SAY that the Shell gas pipeline and terminal in north Mayo has been the subject of controversy would be to understate seriously.

The group said approval for the route would facilitate much-needed investment leading to the creation of jobs and improved energy infrastructure in the region.  

Shell E&P Ireland Limited has released a statement in which it says it looks forward to participating fully in An Bord Pleanála’s resumed oral hearing into the Corrib onshore pipeline.
